Access to Aged Rodents

Purpose: to assist local investigators (San Antonio) in obtaining aged mice and rats for their ongoing studies

How to apply:

  1. Consult with the leaders of Animal Core as to your needs for aged rodents. Make a tentative plan as to how many you will need, of what ages and strain.
  2. Prepare a short application comprising:
      • A one page of description of how you will use the animals. Specify how the use of the aged animals is important for your current research program. Specify the numbers, ages and strain of the animals.
      • One page describing your current funding and whether existing funds will cover your planned experiments on the animals.
      • Your NIH biosketch
  3. You may apply at any time. Submit the application to Dr. Peter Hornsby (hornsby@uthscsa.edu).

The application will be reviewed by the Executive Committee. If it is approved by the committee, the investigator will receive further information on applying to the NIA for aged rodents. Funds will also be provided by the RD Core for any other costs associated with acquiring the animals. However, once they are transferred to the PI’s lab, all costs of maintenance are expected to be borne by the PI.
